Understanding Server-Bound Licensing: How HPanel License System Works

What is Server-Bound Licensing?

HPanel uses a server-bound licensing model, meaning each license is tied to a specific server identified by its IP address. This ensures that each license is used on exactly one server, preventing unauthorized redistribution while keeping the system simple and transparent.

How License Activation Works

  1. Purchase — you buy an HPanel license through our website or WHMCS store
  2. IP Registration — during purchase, you provide your server's IP address
  3. License Key — a unique license key is generated and linked to your IP
  4. Installation — you install HPanel on your server using the license key
  5. Verification — HPanel periodically verifies the license against our license server

License Verification Process

When HPanel runs on your server, it performs a license check every 24 hours:

  • Sends the license key and server IP to the license server
  • License server validates the key, checks IP match, and confirms active status
  • Returns the license tier (Basic, Pro, Business) and feature set
  • If the check fails (network issue), there's a 7-day grace period before features are restricted

License Tiers

Feature Basic Pro Business
Domains Up to 50 Up to 200 Unlimited
Email Accounts Up to 100 Up to 500 Unlimited
Databases Up to 50 Up to 200 Unlimited
FastCGI Cache Yes Yes Yes
Redis No Yes Yes
Malware Scanner Basic Advanced Real-time
Priority Support No Yes Yes

Server Migration / IP Change

If you need to move your HPanel installation to a new server:

  1. Log into your client area at store.hpanel.net
  2. Go to Services → Your License
  3. Click Change IP Address
  4. Enter the new server IP
  5. Install HPanel on the new server with the same license key

IP changes are instant and allowed up to 2 times per month to prevent abuse.

What Happens When a License Expires?

If your license expires (payment not received):

  • Day 0-7: Full functionality continues (grace period)
  • Day 7-14: Warning banner appears in admin panel
  • Day 14+: New account creation is disabled, existing accounts continue working
  • Day 30+: Panel becomes read-only

Your data is never deleted. Renewing the license immediately restores full functionality.

Conclusion

HPanel's licensing system is designed to be fair, transparent, and hassle-free. One server, one license, with generous grace periods and easy IP migration.
